How to Add or Remove a Password on Your Don't Starve Together Server

Learn how to make your DST server private by setting a password or remove it to make your server public.

Adding or Removing a Server Password in DST

The cluster_password setting allows you to make your server private by requiring players to enter a password before joining.

Method 1: Set or Remove the Password Using the RocketNode Panel

  1. Log in to the RocketNode Game Panel.

  2. Select your Don’t Starve Together server.

  3. Stop the server from the Overview tab.

  4. Go to the Configuration tab and open Startup.

  5. Locate the CLUSTER PASSWORD field.

  6. To set a password, type the password you want players to use.

  7. To remove the password, leave the field completely empty.

  8. Return to the Overview tab and start your server.

Method 2: Set or Remove the Password via Config File

  1. Go to the File Manager tab in your panel.
  2. Navigate to: /DoNotStarveTogether/config/server/cluster.ini
  3. Find the line: cluster_password = yourpasswordhere
  4. To set a password, change the value to something custom: cluster_password = letmein
  5. To remove the password, delete everything after the = sign: cluster_password =
  6. Start your server again from the Overview tab.

Notes

  • Anyone with the password can join—even if they’re not on your friends list.
  • If your server is also set to “friends only,” both conditions must be met (must be your friend and know the password).
  • Use a strong, unique password if you’re running events or testing mods privately.
